The turkey went to the team of Steve Hunt and Tracy Treaccar, but they had to fend off four other hungry competitors to get the prize. Five competitors attended the Turkey Day Regatta at ABYC – a competition dubbed the best attended regatta at ABYC with the worst conditions.
On Saturday, we had promising whitecaps on the way out to the race course. It was a ruse. Everybody raked back in anticipation of growing breeze. During our starting sequence, the wind dropped down to 5 knots. We all went around the course in drag-racer mode, but with little fuel in the tank.
We had three more races in light breeze. The wind was shifty with puffs coming from both the left and right.
On Sunday, the wind didn’t try to trick us with any false pretenses – it started light. Approaching the top mark in the first race, there was a persistent shift to the left. Some boats went to the right side of the course looking for the traditional right-side puffs Alamitos Bay is known for. These boats had a rough time getting to the weather mark. Amazingly, though, these same boats made up the distance downwind.
The racing was tight; the race committee did a great job; and the turkey dinner on Saturday was delicious. Another great production put on by ABYC!! |
